Kelli and Bryan – A Winter engagement with cookies

February 21st, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink Author: Jeff

Kelli and Bryan are laid back and a great couple, they also came to their session prepared with a box full of cookies, hot chocolate and flowers, can’t get much better than that. We set out for a nice relaxing session on a brisk South Dakota winter day and created some great photos of a couple in love.

Enjoy

What happens after the shoot

It is the off season for us wedding photographers and I have been thinking about making a post like this for a while. Clients and people in general do not see what happens after the photos are taken.  So what does happen during the time between your shoot and when you see your photos?  The editing happens and that usually includes 3 main things, Sorting, Processing, and Blemish removal. When picking your photographer their post processing abilities are very important and they should have a processing style that not only fits their photos but fits your style as well. Without getting too technical I will just let you see the process.

1.)  When the (thousands) of photos are imported to my computer from the camera they are first sorted. Either Valerie or I go through every photo and pick the best, I throw out duplicates and photos that are not in focus or if I feel they don’t add to the story.

2.)  Once all the photos are sorted I start processing them, usually it’s just a combination of getting the exposure just perfect, adding contrast and tweaking the colors of the photo.  I have some some tricks that I do to try and get a certain look to everything, nothing I do in processing is a “plugin” or “preset” made by someone else, it’s all a custom process.  Skin tones are always important to me and simplicity is very important.  When it comes to my photography I feel that at the end of the day these simply need to be very good portraits of people whether they are posed or candid, my hope is that you will still love your photos 10, 20, even 30 years from now. Below are a few processing samples, you can see the photos on the left are directly out of the camera with no processing and the right is the final product.

3.) When all the photos are processed and exported then the Photoshop fun begins.  I look through the final photos and look for blemishes or pretty much anything that draws my eye from the subject and try to remove it.  Once and a while a client will ask for additional touch-ups to be done and that is taken care of after all the edited photos are uploaded to their online gallery and they proof through them all.

So there you have it, that covers about 90% of what happens between the shoot and when you see your gallery. In the days of digital it doesn’t save time over film it is just a different way to get a very polished look, and I like digital for the fact that it allows me to experiment more in the moment and develop my style.

Davonte – Senior Portrait Session

February 7th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink Author: Jeff

Davonte is a fitting end to our senior portrait season as it corresponds to the end of the football season, he is a running back for Sioux Falls Washington with 20 touchdowns and over 1300 yards rushing for the season, pretty impressive…  Davonte had a very laid back session, all you really need is a good smile, a nice day and in this case a football jersey and things fall into place nicely.  We look forward to the new senior faces next year and I hope the Steelers can make it past Tebow next season…

Enjoy

Andrea and Chris – Winter Wedding – Sioux Falls, South Dakota

January 23rd, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink Author: Jeff

Andrea is a little planner, when she first came to us for her photos she said she specifically picked January to have snow… when the day came we were as surprised as anyone else.  The snow didn’t come but the great decor and the happiness did.  This was a wonderful Washington pavilion affair with the ceremony taking place in the Belbas Theater and the reception being held in the 3rd floor reception area.  Andrea’s chosen professionals came together perfectly to make it happen and in the end Andrea and Chris had their winter wedding, even without snow… Enjoy.

Happy New Year 2012

January 1st, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink Author: Valerie

It’s a new year and we couldn’t be happier with the direction we are headed.  Both personally & professionally.  We feel so lucky every. single. day.  for the life we have.  It doesn’t take a “new year” for us to realize this.  We count our blessings every day.  Really, every day.   With everything we set out to do, our #1 goal is to lead a positive, balanced, fulfilling and happy life. With that being said, here are a couple of our new year’s resolutions:

Valerie (I have several but will bore you with only 2)

1.)   Read my books.

I kinda have this thing (ok, obsession) with purchasing books.  Not a bad thing, right?  Except, I never read them.  When I’m bored, need to relax, need to de-stress, etc., I go to Barne’s & Noble, grab a latte, and walk around.  I never leave empty handed.  I get home, I start a chapter, stick a cute bookmark into chapter 2, and set it down. Forever.  Soooo, this year, I’m going to read my books.  If any of you see me purchasing at Barnes & Noble…stop me!

2.) Spread Positivity.

It’s easy (we’re all guilty of this at some point) to cave to some sort of negativity; gossiping, associating with “cancerous” people, drama, jealousy, dwelling on the negative, etc.  Spreading positivity is on my list every year.  It takes a strong person to separate yourself from negativity. The result is empowering.

Jeff

1.) Eat Healthier.

Most days I find myself eating the worst foods I can get my hands on. Whether it’d be McDonald’s or Buffalo Wild Wings (both are delicious). But, I want to live past 40.  So, I need to eat more vegetables and fruit.

2.) Walk the dogs more.

Not to make it sound like “poor Simon & Jake” because the hounds are pretty spoiled.  But, ever since we moved into our house with a fenced back yard I find myself taking them on less walks.  Between our busy summers and the fence, I think running around the backyard is “fine”.  But, I know how much they love to sniff things and go for walks.

We hope 2012 is an amazing and fulfilling year for you all!  Here’s to a Happy New Year!

xoxo,

Jeff & Val
